A little bit of this and that during an unusually warm and unsatisfying winter....

Thanks go out to the Sevier County schools that have sent us their honor rolls for the semester. Wish all of them did. Students who work hard and make good grades should be recognized, and what better way than to see their names published. So far we've gotten honor rolls only from Wearwood, Seymour Middle and Catlettsburg. How about the others?

Publishing of school honor rolls used to be a time-honored tradition, but it seems that's become a bit out of fashion. Too bad. Of course, if you do send them, please do it in a format that makes it easy for us to type or scan. But send them in whatever format you've got. They can be emailed to editor@themountainpress.com or faxed to 453-4913. ...

Would someone please adjust the traffic signal on Veterans Boulevard at Jayell Road? If you are headed to Sevierville and have to wait for this light, you'll wait a long time. The turn signal for traffic headed toward Pigeon Forge and turning onto Jayell seems to kick in even if nobody is turning off Veterans. If someone is turning, the light stays on far too long for Sevierville-bound motorists. It ought to go back to red as soon as any traffic clears and shouldn't kick in if nobody is turning. Simple adjustment needed here. ...

I always look forward to the Academy Awards telecast each year. Bonnie and I try to see as many of the likely best-picture nominees as we can during the year. Often they play exclusively at the Regal Downtown West theater in Knoxville. Last year I especially enjoyed "The Artist," "The Descendants," "Moneyball," "Hugo" and "War Horse." If you missed "Hugo" and "War Horse," you missed a special time at the movies — the reason they made wide screens and SurroundSound. ...

Downtown Gatlinburg has lost Corky's Barbecue. The restaurant next to Hard Rock Cafe has closed down. The Pigeon Forge location remains open. ... Construction on Hollywood Wax Museum in Pigeon Forge continues, and the building is starting to take on its final shape. It's located where the Dinosaur Museum used to be, and its spot on a hill will make it a striking visual once completed. ... Hope you've taken advantage of Johnson Family of Restaurants' annual buy-one-get-one-free meal deals that continue until early March. The offer is good for lunch weekdays at most of the restaurants and Wednesday nights at Alamo. And I hope you took advantage of the 25 percent off deal with church bulletin at Old Mill Restaurant. That ended Jan. 31. ...

You may have missed it, but last week Mountain Hope Good Shepherd Clinic in Sevierville observed its 13th anniversary. This is one of the most important agencies we have in this county. It provides medical care to the working uninsured. They do good work and serve an important need in this community. ... Don't be surprised to see some of the presidential candidates make their way to Tennessee in the coming weeks, leading up to the March 6 primary on what is called Super Tuesday. Tennessee suddenly has become a critical state for Republicans in the still unsettled primary. The candidates should consider coming to East Tennessee, specifically Sevier County. This is fertile ground for Republicans with deep pockets. ...

Are you among the millions who will watch some or all of tonight's Super Bowl? According to the Retail Advertising and Marketing Association, two out of three Americans say they plan to watch and spend an average of $59.33 on game-related items like food and beverages. Total Super Bowl-related spending is estimated to be $10.1 billion. Get this: 4.5 million planned to buy televisions for the Super Bowl, and seven out of 10 will buy food and drinks for the game. However only about a third of Americans think the game itself is the most important part of the Super Bowl. One in four thinks the commercials are. ...
